The only place on earth where this wonderful plant grows is the Kalahari Desert in southwest Africa. In this extremely dry area, with practically no vegetation, the devil's claw had to develop a special root system to retain moisture. When she grows to a depth of 120 cm, she branches out into a bunch of tuberous roots resembling potatoes. One hundred kilograms of these roots yield six kilograms of raw material.
It owes its name to the appearance of thorny pods developing from bright red flowers. These pods, like devil's claws, are so strong that you have to pry them out of the animals' hooves with pliers.
Each root is individually dug up, sliced, dried and trellis. The result is a sticky substance that is difficult to handle. European settlers learned about this amazing African herb in the early 20th century.
