Lugol's liquid solution 5% is an aqueous solution of pure iodine in potassium iodide. It was developed in 1829 by Jean Lugol and is an example of a solution obtained through solubilization; elemental iodine is very difficult to dissolve in water, but thanks to the presence of potassium iodide, which serves as a solubilizer in this system, it is possible to obtain an iodine solution in the desired concentration (in practice 1%, 2%, or 5%). Lugol's solution with a concentration of 5% is a guarantee of quality.
