It originates from the Mediterranean region: Southern and Southeastern Europe, North Africa, Western Asia, and some regions of Central Asia (India, Pakistan). As an introduced species, it has spread to many regions of the world. It currently grows wild, also outside its original range, in other locations in Africa and Europe, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, North and South America.
