The milk thistle [Latin: Silybum marianum] is an annual cultivated plant from the Asteraceae family, which is also relatively easy to find in nature. Due to its visual similarity, it is often confused with the common thistle. It is characterized by its pointed, spiny leaves and purple flowers. It differs from the thistle, among other things, by its height – it can grow up to 2 meters tall. It originates from the Mediterranean region and is now mainly found in Southern Europe, Egypt, Israel, and Turkey. The seeds (kernels) of the milk thistle are valued in herbal medicine.
