ALA exists in the form of two isomers, S-ALA (which is chemically synthesized) and R-ALA, which is produced by the body. The conventional chemical synthesis of alpha-lipoic acid results in a mixture of these two isomers. ALA is a powerful antioxidant that is both water- and fat-soluble, thus neutralizing free radicals that are soluble in both water and fat. ALA has a significant impact on replenishing other antioxidants - Vitamin C, glutathione, coenzyme Q10, and indirectly also Vitamin E. Supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid shows benefits in various situations of oxidative stress. Numerous studies show that alpha-lipoic acid helps lower blood sugar levels.
