Acerola has only been known on the Polish market for a relatively short time. Nonetheless, it is attracting ever-growing interest among health and nutrition professionals. This plant belongs to the fruits of the Malpigi family. Because of its intense red color, acerola is often referred to as Barbados cherry or pomegranate star. Under natural conditions, this plant is found in South, Central America and parts of North America. However, it is also widely cultivated in other countries with tropical climates (e.g. Madagascar) . Acerola is a small, spreading shrub with evergreen leaves. It usually reaches a height of 2 or even 3 meters and is also characterized by extremely flexible branches. However, it is important to know that the only useful part of this plant is its fruit. Their shape and color may be reminiscent of the well-known cherries. Acerola fruits are red, slightly flattened drupes, 1 to 3 centimeters in diameter. They are characterized by clean flesh and an extremely intense, sour taste. Although we can eat acerola fruit raw, we more often find it in the form of jams, juices or powders.
Importantly, this plant is an excellent source of vitamin C. We can get up to 1677 milligrams of said vitamin per gram of this fruit. In addition, Barbados cherries contain valuable antioxidants and carotenoids (including beta-carotene) . In addition, acerola is an excellent source of provitamin A and essential amino acids, among which we can distinguish: alanine, proline, serine and aspartic acid. Most often, in Polish stores, acerola fruit is available in the form of a convenient powder, which is a great addition to a balanced diet.

Due to their high antioxidant potential, acerola fruits are not only used in the pharmaceutical industry, but also in cosmetics. Therefore, these fruits can be found in the composition of anti-wrinkle creams and masks, as well as in nourishing body lotions and hair conditioners. It's also worth knowing that the anti-inflammatory properties of the Barbados cherry led to its use in making preparations for acne-prone skin.
