Natural ways to calm your nerves
Stress is a natural physiological process—when it occurs in our bodies, various reactions occur, such as an increased heart rate or a rise in blood pressure. Our muscles tense and our breathing accelerates. Adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol levels rise. All of this motivates us to act, sharpens our senses, and achieves the greatest possible physical performance in situations such as a robbery, fire, or other disaster. Unfortunately, many of us today live in a constant rush and have to deal with constant fatigue, overwork, and professional pressure on a daily basis. This leads to constant physical tension and chronic, ongoing stress.
In a single, brief stressful situation, emotions are released and everything returns to normal. However, if we are notoriously stressed and immediately wake up feeling anxious, this anxiety can wreak havoc on our mental and physical health. We often feel hesitancy, anger, low self-esteem, and find it difficult to mobilize ourselves to act. As a result, symptoms such as chronic fatigue can arise, as well as sleep disturbances, headaches, muscle pain, reduced immunity, and digestive problems. So, how do you cope with daily stress to stay healthy?
diet
Stress raises blood sugar levels, and unfortunately, many of us tend to overeat when we're stressed. What we eat has a huge impact on our health. A diet that nourishes the whole body also helps alleviate the physiological symptoms of stress. Therefore, we should avoid sugar and, above all, eat foods rich in magnesium. When we're stressed, magnesium levels drop sharply, and neurotic people suffer from severe deficiencies. B vitamins help strengthen the nervous system, as do vitamin C, zinc, potassium, and omega-3 fatty acids. It's also important to avoid stimulants such as excessive coffee, cigarettes, and alcohol. Coffee is worth replacing with herbal teas, whose calming effect on the nerves is invaluable.
herbal teas
Effective and natural remedies for calming the nerves were already known to our grandmothers. Herbal teas can be a healthy and safe way to overcome stress. Which herbs should you have in your medicine cabinet?
- Chamomile - Chamomile infusion is excellent for severe tension, anxiety, or insomnia. The compounds in chamomile bind to the same receptors in the brain as those found in Valium. At the same time, chamomile is completely safe and non-addictive. The best effects are achieved with regular, long-term consumption of chamomile.
- Lemon balm - Lemon balm also has a calming and soothing effect on the nervous system and supports the digestive process as well as memory and concentration.
- Valerian is a very popular medication for neuroses. Valerian not only calms but also soothes the body and facilitates sleep. Valerian has a distinct smell, so if we don't like it, we can take it in tablet form.
These are just a few of the plants that have a calming effect; verbena, mint, linden, and angelica all have a similar effect. Inhaling essential oils from lavender or hops also helps us relax and calm down.
Exercise and hobbies
First of all, physical exercise causes our body to produce endorphins, colloquially known as the "happy hormones," which can induce a sense of well-being and relieve pain. Being active gives us energy and makes it easier to fall asleep at night. Exercise also allows you to distract yourself from intrusive, disturbing thoughts; it's especially good to exercise outdoors, surrounded by greenery, which calms the mind. It's also worth having your own interests, hobbies that bring us joy and allow us to occupy our minds with something other than worries.
Meeting with friends
Nothing makes you feel better than being able to "talk." This is one of the foundations of mental health visits. Meeting with loved ones will help us release stress and tension by sharing our fears with the other person. This way, we can release the accumulated tension.
Calm down and meditate offline
It's worth finding time during the day to disconnect from computers, laptops, tablets, and phones. Instead, it's worth taking time to reflect and think quietly. Combine this time with a relaxing bath or a walk in the countryside, for example. This allows us to regenerate better than spending pointless and often mindless time on Facebook or in front of the television.
Stress negatively affects our entire body, but as it turns out, there are some ways to cope with it. It's worth using at least a few of them to temporarily control negative thoughts, calm yourself down, and gain energy and distance.
